چکیده

In this study we address the question of whether regional gravity field modeling techniques of GRACE data can offer improved resolution over traditional global spherical harmonic solutions. Earlier studies into large, equatorial river basins such as the Amazon, Zambezi and others showed no obvious distinction between regional and global techniques, but this may have been limited by the fact that these equatorial regions are at the latitudes where GRACE errors are known to be largest (due to the sparse groundtrack coverage). This study will focus on regions of higher latitude, specifically Greenland and Antarctica, where the density of GRACE measurements is much higher. The regional modeling technique employed made use of spherical radial basis functions (SRBF), complete with an optimal filtering algorithm. Comparisons of these regional solutions were made to a range of other publicly available global spherical harmonic solutions, and validated using ICESat laser altimetry. The timeframe considered was a 3 year period spanning from October 2003 to September 2006.

A Comparison of Global and Regional GRACE Models for Land Hydrology

When using GRACE as a tool for hydrology, many different gravity field model products are now available to the end user. The traditional spherical harmonics solutions produced from GRACE are typically obtained through an optimization of the gravity field data at the global scale, and are generated by a number of processing centers around the world. Alternatives to this global approach include s...

Statistical downscaling of GRACE gravity satellite-derived groundwater level data

With the continued threat from climate change, population growth and followed by increasing water demand, the need for hydrological data with high spatial resolution and proper time coverage to be felt more than ago. Therefore, having data such as terrestrial water storage changes and groundwater level changes with high resolution spatial helps to plan and make decisions for water resource mana...

Geoid-to-Quasigeoid Separation Computed Using the GRACE/GOCE Global Geopotential Model GOCO02S - A Case Study of Himalayas and Tibet

The geoid-to-quasigeoid correction has been traditionally computed approximately as a function of the planar Bouguer gravity anomaly and the topographic height. Recent numerical studies based on newly developed theoretical models, however, indicate that the computation of this correction using the approximate formula yields large errors especially in mountainous regions with computation points ...

Validation Concepts for Gravity Field Models from New Satellite Missions

The new satellite missions CHAMP, GRACE and GOCE will provide significantly improved global gravity field information in terms of quality and spatial resolution. In order to quantify the quality of these gravity field models independently from the estimation procedure, new validation concepts are necessary using external information. Validation requires the processing of selected level 3 produc...

Expected Contributions of Dedicated Satellite Gravity Field Missions to Regional Geoid Determination with some Examples from Australia

Global models of the Earth’s gravitational field can be divided among three primary classes: satellite-only, combined and tailored models. Some of the current deficiencies in some of these models will be outlined using examples over Australia. The new dedicated satellite gravity field missions (e.g., GRACE, CHAMP and GOCE) will make significant improvements to the long-wavelength, satellite-der...
